The company behind mFarming, Sibesonke Ltd, was founded by Nokia Top Innovators in 2009. At Nokia, year after year expectations were exceeded how deeply cell phones penetrate into lower income segments. Having witnessed what simple cell phones can do for people in developing countries, the Nokia spin-out Sibesonke decided to create mobile services that improve their daily life. In 2013, the company started building the mFarming platform. Focusing on farmer needs first, it realised soon the necessity to connect the farmers also with AgriBusinesses. Since then, our Nordic qualities and ethics have guided us in developing business and technology innovations for emerging markets. The company founders stayed top innovators.
mFarming’s mission is to attack a giant challenge – food security in Africa. The challenge intensifies with the population growing fastest, with new pests and diseases, and unpredictable rains (climate change). As a digital agriculture pioneer in Africa, starting early 2013, we have been able to use the years of accumulated insights in the agricultural market for innovative solutions. The mFarming AgTech platform creates win-wins for smallholder farmers, local agri companies, and well-known international corporations. To date, millions of farmers in East Africa have received actionable information over mFarming to improve their farm productivity and profitability.
Since then, proven digital farming innovations have served agri businesses across different industries and value chains. Sibesonke was also selected as a technology pioneer for the Farm-to-Market Alliance, a public-private partnership of 6 leading agri-focused organisations: UN World Food Programme (WFP), Yara, Syngenta, Bayer, Rabobank, and AGRA. In 2019, the company won a WFP Zero Hunger competition. The most prestigious awards are AfricaCom (2010) and SLUSH Finland (2009).
